The theme and title is "Feathers, Fur or Fins"
Exhibition Dates - Saturday 23 March to Saturday 20 April 2024
Artwork is due on the weekend of 16 & 17 March (not long away!)

2023 certainly ended with a bang. The last exhibition for 2023 ('21st Annual Art Show". 18 Nov - 16 Dec 2023) had just come to an end, when Cyclone Jaspar started heading our way. The flooding that followed was catastrophic for the whole region, and recovery will take many months (and possibly years). The wonderful art work of Sam Matthews (aka "Moo"), a local multimedia artist, is now on display on the Feature Wall at DAB.
Sam is well-known for her mosaic work and has facilitated in several community art projects in the Douglas Shire; including "Life Among the Trees, I and II" on the toilet blocks in Rex Smeal Park, Port Douglas; the RSL Remembrance Hall, Mossman; and the planter boxes along the main street of Mossman. DABs first exhibition for 2023, "Artful Abstraction", will be on display in the gallery for 4 weeks, from Saturday 6 May to Saturday 3 June. The gallery is a riot of colour, with beautiful paintings, and wonderful ceramic and glass wares.

For the next month the back wall of the gallery will feature the art work of the very talented artist, Jennifer Foster-Hamilton. Jennifer, who mainly works in oils, watercolor and gouache, is exhibiting a diverse range of her paintings. Josephine Matthews has been a DAB member for five years. She started playing with mosaics learning how to cut and glue tiles. At that time her granddaughter loved Disney Princesses, and asked if Josephine could mosaic Cinderella. Josephine then began learning to paint with acrylics so that she could do the backdrops for her mosaics. The Peter Culley Award was created to honour the memory of Peter Culley, a founding tutor at DAB.
The award was given to Rosemary Gotts (on the left) as the DAB artist who has shown the most commitment and improvement for 2014.

Congratulations to Sam Matthews - Winner of the Cairns Regional Council $3,000 prize at the 2014 - BIENNIAL NATIONAL CERAMICS EXHIBITION at the Cairns Regional Gallery. Sam is standing next to her entry, a set of wind chimes. Sam said: 'I was quite overwhelmed. I've only been doing pottery for 6 months!'.
Two other DAB tutors, Ellen Terrell and Liz Showniruk also won minor awards at the exhibition, so DAB was well presented.

The textile art exhibition is now on display in the Douglas Shire Council foyer. The exhibition is a culmination of a ten week experimental textile course run through DAB with a grant from Regional Arts Australia and Artslink Queensland.
